A first-of-its-kind shipment of nickel-hydrogen battery energy storage containers departed Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on April 13, marking China's inaugural sea export of the next-generation storage technology.

The containers were shipped from Meishan port area, highlighting growing international interest in next-generation energy storage systems designed for improved safety, longevity, and sustainability.

Nickel-hydrogen technology is emerging as a viable alternative to conventional lithium-ion storage, offering a service life two to three times longer and lower lifecycle electricity costs. By using a water-based electrolyte, the system significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway and fire. It is also non-toxic and fully recyclable, making it a compelling option for large-scale clean energy applications.

The export comes amid accelerating global efforts to decarbonize maritime logistics and expand the use of clean energy technologies across port operations and supply chains. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has been steadily advancing its green transition in line with China's dual carbon goals, integrating renewable energy deployment with low-emission port infrastructure.

The Meishan port area, the departure point, is Zhejiang's first green electricity port, integrating wind, solar, and energy storage into a unified system capable of generating up to 45 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, with a high share of self-consumed renewable power.
