For Beninese entrepreneur Mao Yabo, 2026 marks his 14th year in Ningbo, following his move in 2011 from studying Chinese in Beijing to pursuing a master's degree at Ningbo University.
After graduating in 2015, he chose Ningbo's Zhenhai district as the starting point for his business, attracted by supportive policies and its proximity to Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, where he founded Ningbo Green Pigeon International Trade.
The company name, Green Pigeon, symbolizes peace and trust. Starting with exports of affordable Chinese daily goods — detergent, tissue paper, and more — Mao built his first success by supplying markets in Benin and neighboring countries.
As his business expanded, he brought his brother, Ye Peng, to China, who has now also graduated from Ningbo University and joined the company. Together, they continue to learn about Chinese culture as they grow their business.
Mao has shifted toward new energy products in recent years, including solar panels, lithium batteries, and solar-powered backpacks; innovations that are now reaching households across Africa.
"Before, I helped people access affordable daily goods. Now, I help bring them clean energy," he said.
