Ningbo bio-jet fuel secures international carbon certification

Ningbo Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Co has achieved a major milestone in sustainable aviation fuel development, as its bio-jet fuel recently received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (ISCC CORSIA).

ISCC CORSIA is one of the world's most widely recognized certification systems for sustainable development and carbon management, covering industries from agriculture to energy and chemicals across more than 100 countries. It is governed by a multi-stakeholder organization headquartered in Cologne, Germany, and relies on independent third-party audits. The certification serves as a "green passport" for companies entering international markets, providing credibility and global recognition.

Zhenhai Refining and Chemical's bio-jet fuel is produced from renewable feedstocks such as animal and vegetable oils and used cooking oil. Compared with conventional jet fuel, it can reduce carbon emissions by more than 50 percent over its full lifecycle, offering a key solution for global aviation decarbonization.

The company operates China's first dedicated bio-jet fuel facility, with an annual capacity of 100,000 metric tons — enough to recycle the cooking oil collected from a city of 10 million people and reduce approximately 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

In 2022, the company became the first in Asia to receive certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). In November, ISCC auditors conducted an on-site inspection, reviewing greenhouse gas data, RSB compliance, and the full production process, ultimately confirming the fuel's sustainability credentials.
